Scene 6

In both music the videos the white people have been represented as at times uncaring; however in Afrika Shox this is presented as a more severe severe indictment with more destructive results. The closing scene of the Afrika Shox video illustrates this to great effect. If we look carefully at this section we can identify….

Homework due Wednesday 1st December

Scenes 5: Analysis of construction and effects

Use the notes made in class to write answers to the following question:

How has the director constructed the scene to create a negative, weak representation of the black man ?

You MUST comment on the use of EACH of cinematography, sound, mise-en-sceneand editing.

*Remember to write a summary conclusion.

A suggested opening:
One of the ways in which the two music videos are different is that in Afrika Shox the representation of the black man is only ever negative, as a weak character who is a victim. One section that illustrates this point is when we see the man in the parking garage when he is offered help by another black man. This section has been skillfully constructed to position the audience as cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene and editing have all been used to great effect. If we look closely at this section we can identify that ....

Scenes 4: Analysis of construction and effects

Use the notes made in class to write answers to the following question:

How has the director constructed the scene to create a positive representation of the black community?

You MUST comment on the use of EACH of cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene and editing.

A suggested opening:
One of the ways in which the two music videos are different is that in LAP we are offered a representation the black community that is positive, supportive and embracing of other cultures. One section that illustrates this point is when we see Madonna's dream vision of the black gospel choir in the church; they invite Madonna to join them on the altar and she is symbolically baptized. This section has been skillfully constructed to position the audience as cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene and editing have all been used to great effect. If we look closely at this section we can identify that .....

Homework due Weds 17th November

Scene 2: Analysis of construction and effects

Use the notes made in class today to write an answer to the following question:

How has the director constructed the scene to create a positive representation of the black man?

You MUST comment on the use of EACH of cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene and editing.

However you DO NOT need to include every single point that we identified today.

A suggested opening:
One of the ways in which the two music videos are different is that in LAP we are offered a representation of black men that is positive. One section that illustrates this point is when we see Madonna's flashback vision of the attack on the young woman and the young black man acting as a good samaritan when he selflessly comes to her aid. This section has been skillfully constructed to position the audience as cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene and editing have all been used to great effect. If we look closely at this section we can identify that ......

You may choose to:
  • take each category (cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene and editing) in turn
  • or discuss the section chronologically
  • or evaluate and prioritise which you feel to be the most effective elements
Aim for 250 words (not counting the ones that I have written above!)

Do your best as if it's good you can use it directly in your final essay.
If it's not so good you will need to repeat it for the final essay.
